Our perception shapes our narratives. The Marks We Make explores the self-interpreting relationships we make with ourselves and others. This series urges the viewer to notice which undertones, warm or cool, is most resonating and if that translates into their outlook beyond the paintings. This is a congruent body of work that reflects on the value of self-conceptualizing thoughts into actions and how those actions can reverberate into others’ lives. It delves into the contingency of viewing the world through influence and how these habits result in cyclical patterns throughout our lives. Constantly oscillating, life inevitably comes with love, pain, confusion, and neutrality that coincides with perspective. This inconsistency can create a cognitive dissonance that I depict in these pieces. Visually intaking each one, a story can begin to unfold which continuously resides back to the concept of hands. The subject of hands shows the amplitude we have as humans to not only create but also grasp the formative experiences we make with others.
Special thank you to Judy Emaus for providing the guidance to create the framework for these piece and Keith Carpella for effortlessly capturing the photographs used for some of the paintings.
