Grand Opening on February 2nd, 2019, 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm
When I visited the new The Studio Door space for the first time, my first impression was how much potential there was for a new beginning. There were still fixtures from the former American Apparel store on the walls and scattered throughout the building, but the assembled team was already hard at work renovating the space and transforming it into the impressive gallery and studio space it is now.
Like a phoenix, The Studio Door has risen from the disappointment of losing their location in North Park due to unsustainable rising rent and reborn again into a much larger and impressive version. At 4,300 square feet there is more gallery space and double the amount of artist studios available.
For The Studio Door owner Patric Stillman, finding the new space has not been without its trials and travails. He had gone through an agonizing half dozen negotiations for spaces spanning several months before finally signing a long-term contract on November 1st, 2018, for the new space. Three months later, with an immense amount of hard work behind them, the team led by Stillman is finally ready to open its doors and start a new chapter.
New programming and a strong focus on artists and the Hillcrest community have already generated excitement and a renewed vitality. The Neighborhood Preview on January 19th saw an impressive amount of visitors, both the new and curious, as well as supporters who have been waiting in anticipation to see the new space.
The Grand Opening is this Saturday, February 2nd, 2019, from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with an all day open house, including pop up art and music.
The Studio Door is located at 3867 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103-3113 between University Avenue and Robinson Avenue in the Hillcrest Neighborhood.
