Patric Stillman, local painter and founder of The Studio Door has his first solo exhibition at the gallery
From the May 24th press release:
The Studio Door is pleased to present Person Place or Thing, a solo exhibition by San Diego-based painter Patric Stillman. For his first solo show at The Studio Door, Stillman has created a suite of noir paintings that explore cinematic style while also examining the constant flux of personal identity.
With a sense of being dropped into the middle of a story, the viewer is emerged in the artist’s most intimate work to date. Working in black and white with subtle tones, Stillman creates stylistic night scenes that blend societal issues with revealing narratives.
“In spite of social and political advances in the past few decades, my community is often still referred to as one would describe outsiders. By using the noir style and playing with hardboiled characterizations of gangsters and fatales, I get to visually explore identity as a journey. In my paintings, I am creating fictional realities that offer an expanding perspective on what it is to be a man and as in my case, a gay man,” said Stillman.
As a colorful counterpoint to his latest series, Stillman will also present The Making of Brotherhood Tarot. Independently released in 2004, Stillman released a masculine themed fantasy deck of digital photography that continues to sell internationally. The exhibit will explore Stillman’s personal journey to create this alternative Tarot for gay men.
The exhibition dates for Person Place of Thing are July 5 – 23, 2017 at The Studio Door (3750 30th Street, North Park – San Diego) with an opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 8 from 6 PM – 9 PM. Artwork is for sale to the public. The exhibit contains mature content. This exhibition is a follow-up to The Studio Door’s June exhibit PROUD, which features works on identity and pride by LGBTQ artists from across the country and South Africa.
The Studio Door was founded by Patric Stillman in 2014. The gallery presents regional and national exhibitions; alongside of artists studios; and offers art-to-market programming for artists interested in creative commerce.
