Gallery holds final exhibition in North Park with art inspired by Tarot
Announcing its final North Park exhibition, The Studio Door presents Tarot: A Fool’s Journey Through Life. This national exhibition showcases artists inspired by Tarot, Oracle and Divination decks, even Loteria cards. The visual arts exhibition runs August 3rd through August 26th, 2018, with a reception on the evening of Saturday, August 4th, from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
The fool’s journey is a metaphor for the journey through life that is explored in the imagery of the Tarot. Each card, or in this case artwork, stands for an experience that a person must go through to realize the wholeness of life. The artwork in this exhibition embraces the artist’s view of individuality, personal growth and enlightenment using the lens of mysticism.
Fifty-five works from artists from thirteen states will be featured within the exhibition that will be presented in two parts. Thirty-five works will be exhibited in the The Studio Door gallery with additional works available online at www.thestudiodoor.com. Artworks will be available for sale.
Before I have to shutter the North Park gallery and studios, I wanted to feel as if I had gone full circle
“A group of deeply talented artists comes together in this exhibition, presenting their vision of the world, as they see it in the cards. Their work represents much that is beautiful but also much that is wise,” said exhibition juror Christopher Butler. Living in the United Kingdom, Butler is a multiply published author and illustrator whose works include The Son Tarot: Mysticism, Meditation and Divination for Gay Men (Schiffer Books. 2012), and The Healing Light Tarot (Lo Scarabeo. 2017). He is also the illustrator for Kay Stopforth’s bestselling Quantum Tarot 2.0 (Lo Scarabeo. 2010).
A complete list of exhibiting artists: Pamela Almeida, Stephen Babcock, Brandin Barón, Eliana Bentley, Michele Benzamin-Miki, Mandelyn Bouso, Cade Burkhammer, Christopher Butler, Pablo Callejo, Talia Ceravolo, Howard Cook, Lorraine DarConte, Holly DeFount, Lisa Dolan, Danielle Feige, Eden Gallanter, Tony Gangitano, Susan Gesell, Laurel Izard, Symantha Jones, Elisabeth Ladwig, Alan Larkin, Cindy Lemmon, Marcel Mercado, Gillian Moss, Heather Muise, Kellie Rogers, Jen Solomon, Ramona Szczerba, Patric Stillman, Candy Tutt, and Nikki Vasquez.
“Before I have to shutter the North Park gallery and studios, I wanted to feel as if I had gone full circle. Producing this exhibition accomplishes that goal,” said The Studio Door owner Patric Stillman, who started his creative career by creating Brotherhood Tarot, a masculine themed fantasy deck that draws inspiration from Gay history and mythology. “This mystical exhibition allows me, personally, to reflect on the journey of a dozen years and offers all of us the permission to look at the future as a new starting point.”
The North Park storefront will close its doors at the end of the exhibit. It was reported earlier this year that half a block in North Park was sold, which includes the gallery and artists studios. With rents being more than quadrupled, the arts organization has been in search of a new facility. Stillman shared that he has not yet been able to identify an affordable space to move the gallery and ten artists working in the space. Undaunted by the challenges, Stillman is confident that the right location will be found.
The Studio Door is located at 3750 30th Street, San Diego, 92104. For additional information contact gallery owner Patric Stillman (619) 255-4920 or visit the website at www.thestudiodoor.com. The Studio Door is open Tuesday – Saturday from 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm, and Sunday 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
